A
constitutional monarchy founded by the late King Abdullah, son of Sherif of
Mecca al-Hussein bin Ali, in 1921 as the Emirate of Transjordan.
·
Gained
independence from Britain in 1946 and was renamed the Hashemite Kingdom of
Jordan.
·
Founding member
of the Arab League and member of the United Nations, the Organization of the
Islamic Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement.
·
Head of state:
King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, ascended to the throne and assumed his
constitutional authorities in 1999. He succeeded his late father King Hussein
bin Talal under whose role Jordan underwent an awesome leap in the fields of
political liberties, science, education and health care that puts it among the
highest ranks of developing nations.

Internal
politics: based on the constitution, the principles of democracy and rule of
law, and separation of power between the three authorities: the executive (The
government) the legislative ( parliament: elected
House of Deputies – and an appointed House of senates) and the judiciary (courts of law
are guaranteed sovereignty by constitution.)

Main issues in
Jordan’s foreign politics: Middle East peace process and rights of
Palestinians; Arab solidarity; inter-Islamic fraternity and coordination with
emphasis on countering anti-Islamic biases by reflecting the genuine image of
Islam; and international peace, tolerance and cooperation
·
Diplomatic
relations established 1965.
·
Jordanian
embassy in Kuala Lumpur set up September 17, 1997.
·
The third Jordanian Ambassador to Malaysia, H.E. Hassan Al Jawarneh, has presented his credentials
to His Majesty the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong in September 2005.
·
Political
relations based on friendship, cooperation and common values: tolerance, freedom
of expression and religious practice and international peace and justice.
·
Malaysian
community in Jordan comprised of some 2000 students, a few business people and
social residents.
·
Jordanian
community in Malaysia comprised of skilled labor (engineers, university
lecturers and business consultants,) students and social residents.
·
Bilateral
agreements cover a number of fields of cooperation including agreements and
memorandums on education, economic, technical and cultural cooperation, and an
agreement on the avoidance of double taxation.
·
Target:
Expanding bilateral trade, setting up joint ventures, and exploring markets for
Jordanian pharmaceuticals and other medicine-related products, in addition to
job opportunities for Jordanian medical doctors and paramedical professionals.
