Education
With its literacy rate of 85%, Jordan constitutes a center for higher learning in the Arab world. Students from various nationalities are currently enrolled in Jordanian public and private universities, not only receiving quality education but also bringing in traces of their cultures and traditions and taking along features of Jordanian / Arab culture and tradition

ADMISSION REGULATIONS AT JORDANIAN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES FOR THE
ACADEMIC YEAR 1997/1998 |
First :-
Admission of students at Jordanian public universities for the Bachelor Programme are subject to the following requirements :
a. Applicants must hold a Jordanian Secondary Education Certificate (S.E.C.) or its recognized equivalent.
b. Students of the science branch of Jordanian Secondary Education or its equivalent are eligible to apply to all universities for all majors, so long as their S.E.C. grades meet the minimum requirements listed in article two.
c. Students of vocational branches of Jordanian secondary education (or its equivalent) are eligible to apply for admission in specific faculties relevant to their branch of vocational study, provided that they study and pass two extra courses stipulated by the university.
University studies open for holders of vocational secondary education certificates include the following:
Ø Industrial branch: engineering, natural sciences, agriculture, education and sport education.
Ø Commercial and hotels branches: humanities and social sciences.
Ø Nursing branch: nursing, science education, sport education and paramedical Science.
Ø Agricultural branch: agriculture, natural sciences, education and sport Education.
d. The minimum grade average for admission at the Jordanian universities are as follows:
Ø Medical and dental faculties - 85%
Ø Faculties of engineering, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and Paramedical Sciences – 80%
Ø All other majors – 65%
e. Applicants are entitled to choose their majors of preference, but their admission will also be based hirarchially and competitively on their S.E.C. grade average.
f. Each university may independently expound additional conditions for admission to specific departments, the nature of which may require certain qualities and qualifications.
Second:-
In addition to the above, the following measures are applicable for admission :
a. The applicants with the highest grades in each district is guaranteed admission to public universities.
b. 20% of the seats in each faculty at public universities are allocated for children of the members of the Jordanian Armed Forces, Security, and Civil Defense departments and retired civil servants.
c. Each university reserves (15) fifteen seats for children of martyrs from the Jordanian Armed Forces and Security and Civil Defense Departments.
d. 5% of the seats in each faculty at public universities are reserved for children of both working and retired Ministry employees Ministry of Education.
e. Applicants with the highest grade in each district of science branch are granted admission to the medical, dental faculties of pharmacy, according to their preference.
Applicants with the highest seven grade averages of the science branch in each district are granted admission to the faculties of engineering.
f1. Applicants to the Faculty of Sport Education must also pass a medical and physical test to prove their fitness to the requirement of the faculty.
f2. Applications for the major of fine arts should be submitted directly to the Al-Yarmouk University.
f3. Each university maintains the right to admit a number of students in the fields of sports, fine arts, and music in accordance with its own requirements, provided that the quotas do not exceed the following numbers :
Ø 20 students who have good achievement in sports at the various faculties
Ø 10 students who have good achievement in sports in the sports education faculty.
Ø 10 students who have good achievement in fine arts at the various faculties
Ø 10 students who have good achievement in fine arts (fine arts and music faculties)
The Higher Education Council would form a committee to put a proper mechanism for choosing the students who have good achievement in the field of sports.
g. The presidents of the universities decide on the admission of the children of Jordanian diplomats and Royal Jordanian officials abroad.
h. Ten per cent of the seats in all public universities are allocated to expatriate students except for Al-Albait University, at which the number of expatriate students is decided by the university itself.
i. The maximum of five percent of seats are allocated for Jordanian students who complete their secondary education abroad, provided that their grade averages meet the requirements of the respective faculties.
j. The Higher Education Council may admit a number of the disabled and blind students.
Third :-
a. Admission Procedures are conducted by a Joint Coordination Bureau (JCB) under the supervision of the minister of higher education.
b. The headquarters of the JCB would be at the University of Jordan, and it will be chaired by one of the deputy presidents of the University of Jordan.
Fourth:-
Taking into consideration the above-mentioned regulations, admission to Jordanian public universities shall be based on competitive grades of the Jordanian Secondary Education Certificate or its equivalent.
a. The average of the student at the secondary exam would be endorsed when to take into consideration for the admission at the Jordanian universities for the academic year 1997/98.
b. Each university regulates its own admission and aptitude exams, in accordance with the minimum S.E.C. grades stipulated by the H.E.C. as follows :
Ø Pharmacy - 80%
Ø Engineering - 80%
Ø Other majors - 60%
Fifth:-
a. Students of the science branch of Jordanian Secondary Education or its equivalent are eligible to apply to all universities for all majors, as long as their S.E.C. grades meet the minimum requirements in article two.
b. Students of the arts branch Jordanian secondary education or its equivalent are eligible to apply for the admission for all majors humanities and social sciences.
c. Students of vocational branches of Jordanian secondary education or its equivalent are eligible to apply for admission at the universities in specific faculties or majors relevant to their branch of vocational study provided that they study and pass the two extra courses stipulated by the university.
Sixth:-
The grade average of S.E.C. shall be the basis for admission to the Jordanian private universities for the academic year 1997/98.
