Monuments and archeological sites

Petra:

260 km south of Amman; Arab Nabteans’ ancient capital; one of the world’s most famous archeological sites; spectacularly curved out of the mountains; rose color sand stone; hidden in the mountains and previously known as the "lost city."

 Jerash:

48 km north of Amman; ancient Greko- Roman city; best-reserved Roman architecture outside Italy; colonnaded streets, baths, theatres, plazas and arches – 500 meter altitude.

Umm Qais:

100 km north of Amman; site of ancient Greko-Roman Decopolice town of Gadara; 518 meters above sea level; view of Lake Tiberias and Syrian Golan Heights; black basalt theatre; archeological museum.

Other Sites:

many more ancient sites, museums and palaces (Roman and Islamic): Mount Nebo (where Moses is believed to have lived out his remaining days,) Tabaqat Fahl, Qusayr Amra, Qasr al-Mushatta, Qasr al-Azraq, Qasr al-Harraneh and Qasr al-Hallabat.

 

Recreational Tourism

Dead Sea:

         45 km west of Amman; lowest point on earth; unsinkable; content of salt and other mineral ratio eight times higher than world’s oceans; devoid of plant and animal life, mudpack therapy, medical treatment center; entertainment.

Hammamat Ma’een spa:

50 km southwest of Amman – mineral water medical therapy – public hot springs and commercial resort – body packmud treatment.

The Gulf of Aqaba:

320 km south of Amman; clean beach and warm weather; spectacular reefs and marine life; over 140 species of corals; water sports and diving; palm trees; the Aqaba port; Gulf.
